RIVERS OF TIBET: Life waters of Asia
Tibet is often called the Land of Snows, and the rivers from the roof of the world spread out across Asia; they flow into Pakistan, India, Burma, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and China. Billions of people depend on them for commerce, food, and transportation in addition to providing drinking water, and they are known by names familiar to people around the world: the Brahmaputra, Indus, Salween, Mekong, Yangtse, and Yellow rivers, among others, all arise in Tibet.
These rivers are changing. Almost unnoticed by the rest of the world, Chinese authorities are ignoring the needs of both downstream countries and the Tibetan people as they manipulate the flow of waters that have fed some of the Earth's oldest civilizations. This calendar highlights twelve such major Tibetan rivers from the high Tibetan plateau.
The International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) works to promote human rights and democratic freedoms for the people of Tibet and helps build awareness about Tibet during this crucial period in the country’s history.
